It was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1994. Settlements in the dale include Pateley Bridge, Wath, Bewerley, Glasshouses, Ramsgill, Lofthouse, Summerbridge, Hampsthwaite, Birstwith, Darley, Kettlesing, Felliscliffe and Middlesmoor.
